  1. WHY SHOULD NOT OLD MEN BE MAD?

  3. WHY should not old men be mad?
  4. Some have known a likely lad
  5. That had a sound fly-fisher's wrist
  6. Turn to a drunken journalist;
  7. A girl that knew all Dante once
  8. Live to bear children to a dunce;
  9. A Helen of social welfare dream,
  10. Climb on a wagonette to scream.
  11. Some think it a matter of course that chance
  12. Should starve good men and bad advance,
  13. That if their neighbours figured plain,
  14. As though upon a lighted screen,
  15. No single story would they find
  16. Of an unbroken happy mind,
  17. A finish worthy of the start.
  18. Young men know nothing of this sort,
  19. Observant old men know it well;
  20. And when they know what old books tell
  21. And that no better can be had,
  22. Know why an old man should be mad.
